Launceston's annual finals day was well attended on a sunny Sunday with fans viewing 8 hours of competitive tennis from 11:00 until 19:00. Spectators were also able to enjoy refreshments throughout brought by fellow club members.
In a repeat of last years final Henry took on Richard with Richard looking to avenge his previous defeat. In the first set Henry’s consistency proved crucial as he took it 6-1. The second set was far Closer, Richard played some great Tennis to surge into a 3-0 lead, this though spurred Henry on to fight back and take the 2nd set 6-4 to win the match and retain the championship.
Ladies Singles: Charlotte beat Hayley 2-6, 6-2, 6-1
Last years winner Charlotte took on her doubles partner in the ladies final. Hayley took the first set 6-2 displaying a variety of shots to move Charlotte around the court. The match swung in the second set with Charlotte making very few errors and hitting good depth to take the set 6-2. Charlotte kept the momentum in the 3rd set and won the set 6-1 to retain the title.
Mixed Doubles: Henry & Annette beat Alex & Anne 3-6, 6-0, 7-5
The mixed final was a tight match with momentum constantly changing throughout, Alex and Anne raced into an early lead with some strong hitting from Alex and good depth from Anne, winning the first set 6-3. A change in tactics brought Henry and Annette the second set 6-0. The 3rd set saw several swings, with Alex and Anne having a match point at 5-4; Henry and Annette saved the match point and went on to win the set and match 7-5, with Annette sealing the win with a forehand return winner!
Men’s Doubles: Henry & Adrian beat Richard & Adam Cornish 6-2, 6-4
The men’s doubles saw Henry and Adrian take on Alex and Richard. Both sets saw some good Tennis played. Adrians solid play and Henrys movement at the net brought them the first set 6-2. The 2nd set was closer going with serve in the early stages with Adam and Richard showing more aggression at the net. Adrian and Henry though got a crucial break and were able to close the set 6-4 to win the trophy.
Ladies Doubles: Jen & Ruth beat Charlotte & Suzanne 6-4, 6-3
The ladies double final saw Jen and Ruth take on Charlotte and Suzanne in a high-quality match featuring several exciting rallies. Both sets could have gone either way but Ruth and Jens experience of playing together and strength at the net earnt them the title winning 6-3, 6-4.
Junior Boys: Isac beat Stan 7-5, 6-7, 15-13 (in match tie break)
Isaac faced Stan in the junior boy’s final in a very evenly matched contest. Isaac one the first set 7-5 but Stan fought back to win the 2nd 7-6 on a tie break. The players decided to decide the match in a championship tie break, this too provided incredibly close, both players had match points with Isaac finally sealing the match 15-13!
Junior Girls Freya beat Ivy 6-0, 6-1
Ivy took on Freya on the junior girls final, this was both players first final at the club with both playing well on the day. Freya proved just too strong and the important moments to win the match 6-0, 6-1
Mens Plate: Sam Beat Simon 6-7, 6-3, 6-4
In the final match of the day Sam took on Simon in the men’s plate. This was a very high-quality match with momentum always changing and no one sure who would win. Sam was 5-2 up in the first set but Simon showed great determination to claw it back and win it on a tie break. The 2nd and 3rd sets were very evenly fought, Sam managed to come out on top winning the crucial points to win the sets 6-3, 6-4 to seal the title.
Ladies Plate Freya beat Nicole 6-3, 3-6, 7-6
Freya took on Nicole in the ladies’ plate in an epic match lasting over 2 ½ hours. Both players displayed incredible consistency with lots of lengthy rallies throughout. Freya took the first set 6-3 only for Nicole to win the second by the same score line. The deciding set was even closer with the match finally decided by a tie break. Freya came out on top to win the lady’s plate.
