AGM 2007 - Saturday 10th February 2007

AGM Report - Written by Brenda Hooton, Club Secretary

Members of the LAUNCESTON TENNIS CLUB gathered at the home of Jenny & Richard Worth at Trevell for the Club’s AGM. Chairman Rod Wood welcomed everyone including new-to-Launceston dentist Andy Crighton, who, with wife Jeannette were looking forward to joining the Club.

Secretary Brenda Hooton gave a report of the 2006 triumphs including the Ladies 1st Team finishing 1st and will move up to the 1st Division and even though the 2nd Team finished last, they played much better than the year before and were looking forward to a more successful year ahead. The Men’s 1st team finished 3rd, the 2nd team finished 2nd and the 3rd team finished 7th and looked forward to an improved year as well.

The season ended on a high when Ruth Cornish and Jenny Worth of our Ladies 1st Team won the Morton Nance Cup (Division 2) defeating Bude 6-1, 6-0, while Tim Mitchell and Chris Stanbury of our Men’s ‘B’ team won the Holman Cup (Division 2) defeating Redruth 6-3, 6-1.

The members gave their heartiest congratulations to Jenny Worth for winning the BBC Sports Unsung Hero 2006 for the SW Region.

Grateful thanks were extended to Peter McAughey and his committee for the work done on the Business Plan required for fundraising applications for the new courts planned for the College.

An up-to-date account on the progress of the proposed new tennis courts was reported by Peter McAughey, which outlined the completed Business Plan and the applications for funding. These courts would be built in partnership with Launceston Community Sports Association and Launceston College and would be made available to everyone – College students, Tennis Club members and the general public of every age and ability.

The Chairman reported 42 members and encouraged everyone to recruit more new members and to raise the profile of the need for new tennis courts.
